During the 17th and 18th of January, the Canary Islands Institute of Technology held the last Tourisme international event in Spain. Over 70 assistants gathered for the training activities, the matchmaking event, and the visit to FITUR 2023, one of the biggest international tourism fairs in the world. This is the largest Tourisme event held so far, with representatives from Spain, France, and Italy.

Topics such as water and residue management, circular economy models for touristic businesses, or energy efficiency were already displayed during previous training. This time, our SMEs have worked on a strategic plan to start pursuing sustainability on their own, while projecting their experiences and knowledge. This document not only integrated all the contents taught previously, but it also gave place to a helpful strategy for every organization. To achieve great results, all SMEs were divided into groups, depending on their experience in sustainability promotion, in order to facilitate teamwork too. The final products were specific guidelines that will add value and minimize risk for the company in the future.

Alongside the working plan, the participants could take part in workshops focused on sustainable business management. To deepen into great examples and good practices, we also visited different successful businesses that put sustainability into practice. In this case, we learned about Mo de Movimiento, SleepNAtocha, and TRIPLE, which were all in the Madrid urban area. Outside Madrid, our beneficiaries took an insight into Bodega Tierra Calma, in San Martín de Valdeiglesias.

As we previously did, we arranged another matchmaking event with over 70 participants that had a unique opportunity to share their respective experiences and good practices. Talking about success, we must mention two Spanish beneficiaries that could disseminate their good practices through Tourisme during these last months. The first one is Grupo Los Telares, a family business located in La Gomera that offers rural experiences; they shared their good practices in an event held in Paris by L’Institut Paris Region. The second one is Canarian Hospitality, a hotel management company from Gran Canaria that took part in Ecomondo Italia, one of the largest fairs for innovation and sustainability.

This Tourisme event was broadly followed by over 70 participants from different countries that traveled to Madrid during those days. In fact, we received 16 French companies, another 16 from Italy, and 17 businesses came from different parts of Spain. Additionally, a delegation of members from the ITC arranged everything and took care that everyone had a fruitful experience. On the last day, we all joined FITUR 2023. There, all the beneficiaries could keep forging strategic matches for their sustainability and competitiveness, while also learning from the latest trends in the tourist industry.

A year after the first Tourisme training activity, this fourth and final event in Spain has supposed great learning for everyone involved in the project. We will see each other in March for the closing event of the project. There we will be able to display specific results and metrics that measure the impact of Tourisme on the beneficiary’s businesses so far.

Spanish SMEs have gathered together in Valencia for ITC’s third training within Tourisme’s project. For three days, the companies could join lessons and workshops to improve their business sustainability. This third training also focused on environmental and sustainable tourism certifications such as those offered by AENOR, Biosphere Tourism, or Bioscore. This event was held in the CdT Valencia facilities, the regional tourism organization.

This time around, activities focused on practical aspects, such as communication of sustainable activities and design of sustainable travels. However, to enrich this experience even further, many visits were scheduled, so companies could know in the first person about other initiatives aimed to create more sustainable touristic experiences.

Workshops to improve our sustainability

The first day started with the introduction of SEIMED, which is the regional point in Valencia for the Enterprise Europe Network. They provided some useful information about the services they offer to companies in the internationalization and sustainability fields. Marco Zurita from Red Española Pacto Mundial also gave a speech on the key aspects of the Sustainable Development Goals that companies could find useful to take into account.

After that, companies merged into groups to participate in two different workshops. Two of them had the opportunity to learn and share knowledge about key aspects of how to communicate sustainability and corporate social responsibility, one of them was held online. Meanwhile, the third group joined a workshop about designing sustainable travels.

In the afternoon, they visited Casa Montaña which was established back in 1836. Since then, this business has obtained different certifications that prove its commitment to excellence. Our SMEs could exchange experiences about it. Before the end of the first day, our beneficiaries were also introduced to urban sustainability through a visit to Las Arenas Balneario Resort. Last, but not least, the group had the opportunity to enjoy a sensorial guided tour in the beach area provided by In Valencia, one of the SMEs beneficiaries.

Getting into sustainability certifications and more

During the second day, the companies got a rich insight into sustainability certifications, such as those offered by AENOR, Biosphere Tourism, and Bioscore. All of them were introduced in different sessions which were accompanied by other activities aimed to teach the beneficiaries about tools to improve their impact, like a talk from Visit Valencia about the regional actions taken to minimize the environmental impact of tourism in Valencia.

Later that day, the entire group visited Mar de Fulles, a business that was born with sustainability in mind. They have developed an entire philosophy around it, as well as specific actions like self-sufficiency energy, ecological agriculture, fair trade, and using local products. This very successful case allowed companies to share experiences and good practices around it.

Heritage, Fitur, and beyond

For the last day of the training, our beneficiaries had a closer look at other related projects like ARCH Project within Las Naves facilities, which they later visited. This one is an EU-funded research project that aims to protect areas of cultural heritage from hazards and risks, which is also a form of sustainability when we talk about sustainable tourism, especially in urban areas or heritage sites. Besides, beneficiaries also joined a brief introduction to Misión València 2030 to learn about specific sustainable goals within the Comunitat Valenciana.

Before departure, all the companies got to know what steps are being taken until the last TOURISME training for Spanish beneficiaries which will be Fitur 2023. If you want to stay informed of all our updates, take a look at our website and follow us on social media.

The Canary Islands Institute of Technology (ITC) hosts the third Tourisme training for Spanish SMEs. Valencia will be the place where the Spanish Tourisme’s beneficiaries will gather from the 26th to 28th September. CdT Valencia, the regional tourism organization, will also host the activities in its installations. The agenda will focus on two main objectives for this project. First, SMEs will be learn about good practices to promote sustainability within their companies. Secondly, they will have a chance to get some insights on sustainability certifications, such as those offered by AENOR, Biosphere Tourism or Bioscore.

The training will also offer a great opportunity for SMEs to share experiences and learn from other companies. To achieve this, different visits to locations and companies that work sustainably have been scheduled during the those three days, like Casa Montaña and Mar de Fulles. Tourisme’s goal to allow SMEs to certify their commitment with sustainability will be worked during the second day.

Topics such as sustainable travel design, communicating the corporate social responsibility, energy saving or waste reduction will be covered among many others through talks and interventions. Spanish SMEs have had a great part in the definition of some of these topics through feedback and suggestions to guarantee that these trainings are meaningful for the kind of economic activities they develop.

This is the first event celebrated in Spain after the great success of previous activities, such as the first ever training back in January to visit FITUR in Madrid, as well as the first in-person project meeting and matchmaking in later April. Twenty-one Spanish SMEs are currently part of Tourisme. If you want to know more about them, check our map out with all the data from our beneficiaries. 15 French SMEs were trained in Paris on the 21st, 22nd and 23rd of March 2022, by the Institut Paris Region, with the objective of pointing them to the right national actors and fundings in the sector.

The presentations of the first day were ensured by Marion Tillet, on the importance of the shift towards a more sustainable tourism, and Maxime Kayadjanian, on France’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. According to a study led by the French Agency for Ecological Transition (ADEME), tourism accounted for over 7% of France’s GDP in 2018, with 89 million tourists, representing 8% of the world’s GHG emissions. More than three quarters of these emissions are generated by transportation, with foreign visitors accounting for 80% of transportation related GHG emissions. The study identified paths for reducing GHG emissions from tourism in France, around three main classic levers: Sobriety, which aims to reduce an activity, energy efficiency and carbon intensity. Several tools of ADEME were then presented to the SMEs, to answer to their different needs, such as: the Fonds tourisme durable, for the restauration and accommodation sectors, several fundings for the ecological transition, fundings dedicated to SMEs, and fundings dedicated to tackling the use of single-use plastic. The last presentation was dedicated to the application of the circular CANVAS business model in the tourism sector, by Vincent Gollain. CANVAS is a tool to analyze the current activity and its impacts, and design regenerative solutions. It allows a company to describe and understand all existing flows and to integrate your new processes, products or experiences using the principles of the circular economy. The day closed with group workshops on the themes identified during the call for SMEs applications: Awareness, implementation of specific practices, development of a sustainable business strategy, etc.

The second day of training focused on energy savings, sustainable mobility, and circular economy. Madeleine Noeuveglise and Franziska Barnhusen held a presentation on the methodology to structure an energy saving strategy, from the diagnostic to the implementation, with concrete steps, tips and practices. The second presentation revolved around the perspectives of sustainable mobility as a whole, including the tourists mobility, as well as the staff mobility and the company’s flows. It offered several solutions to reducing mobility’s carbon footprint: promoting common transportation and active travel modes (e.g. offer walking and cycling tours), setting up a sustainable mobility plan, and others. Marion Tillet and Maxime Kayadjanian then presented several practices in circular tourism, such as tips for a green procurement, the use of short circuits, seasonal organic products, bulk products, purchasing upcycled furnitures, and practices for overall resource management.

The third day of the training was dedicated to the conclusions of the workshops, and to the visit of the Zazie Hotel, an alternative, eco-responsible, inclusive hotel.
