NECSTouR held a masterclass on the keys to delivering sustainability in tourism

19 destination management organizations traveled to Lanzarote to attend a masterclass held by the Network of European Regions for Sustainable and Competitive Tourism (NECSTouR), on 14 and 16 March.

“Empowering destinations leaders to deliver sustainability”: the name of the event, which was organized in collaboration with SPEL-Turismo Lanzarote, could not be clearer. Indeed, the objective was to provide participants with the knowledge and practical tools to deliver the necessary action for tackling three major common challenges: reducing seasonality, measuring tourism’s carbon footprint and fostering tourism’s climate action. Gathering key actors in Lanzarote was also the perfect opportunity to foster debates and discuss new solutions.

To complement the practical part, Dr. Paul Peeters from Breda University of Applied Sciences and Graeme Jackson from the Travel Foundation presented the ‘Envisioning Tourism in 2030’ report released by The Travel Foundation. The report analyses 40 types of actions that will help tourism sectors reduce emissions by 50% by 2030 and reach net zero by 2050.
